Creative Fibre Routes for Challenging Urban Sites
Route design, complex permitting, HDD river/highway crossings, and bespoke fibre builds for hyperscale data centres.
Key Facts:
- 95% net‑new fibre route
- Highway & river “moonshots”
- Urban constraints overcome
The Challenge
A major Canadian ISP sought to leverage existing regional fibre routes and its investment in wireless densification to reach new subscribers in a low‑density residential area.
The challenge was threefold:
- Economics: Traditional last‑mile builds to scattered homes on the Bruce Peninsula were hard to justify on a pure ROI basis, even with fibre already in the area.
- Execution risk: Turning a backbone and wireless upgrade into actual residential sign‑ups required careful coordination with the municipality and a clear delivery plan for connecting homes.
- Community engagement: Residents needed to understand the benefits of next‑generation broadband and be motivated to switch, in a community that had long been underserved and cautious about new infrastructure projects.
The ISP needed a partner that could turn existing fibre and wireless assets into a viable business case—de‑risking the build, aligning municipal stakeholders, and driving real subscriber uptake in a sparsely populated market.
The Solution
The ISP was already working with Shared Fibre on wireless densification along the Bruce Peninsula. The community of Oliphant, Ontario, sat adjacent to the new fibre build serving those wireless sites.
Shared Fibre saw an opportunity to leverage the regional fibre project and its relationship with the municipality to deliver modern connectivity to the community and new subscribers to the ISP.
Shared Fibre engaged local residents by sponsoring community events to drive residential activations.
Outcomes
- For the carrier: Improved network performance and subscriber growth, while minimizing capital expenditure through Shared Fibre’s flexible financing model.
- For the municipality: A new, marketable digital asset and an enhanced reputation as a connected, investment‑ready community.
- For residents and businesses: Reliable, high‑speed broadband that supports growth, innovation, and next‑generation services.
